Unhoused AI was founded to improve the resource gap for homeless communities. We built it with web scrapers to simplify the process of finding and reaching help.
Other Work
Unhoused AI is an initiative of Empower With AI, which aims to expand AI literacy in K-12 education and build public-benefit technology. Empower With AI has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to teach in-person AI lessons.
Developing Unhoused
We used a multi-pronged approach to create Unhoused AI.
1) Web scrapers collected information for all 2,500+ resources
2) Large Language Models (LLMs) were used to summarize and identify key information from collected data
3) Organized dataset was loaded into a database for later retrieval
4) Front-end (user interface) and back-end (making requests to database) were connected to enable user queries
Today's search runs on thousands of public listings from OpenStreetMap, last refreshed on the most recent update. Coverage varies by city. If you see only a few results, call 211.
